Character:
We first met Minnie Mouse and her sister Lucy, last year, when there was the possibility that the young gentleman who adopted them, had to give them up- actually, we had met Lucy the year before when we found her as a stray- Both girls had been fostered and officialy adopted by a young couple who volunteered for a Rescue group in Michigan- They had moved down to Fl and life has been challenging- after a divorce the young gentleman tried to keep his fourlegged family together, but this January he knew he cannot keep them any more- So he contacted us again and we went to meet him and the girls- I remembered that the girls were old, but nothing prepared me for the condition Minnie was in! She was emaciated, nearly catatonic and not really responding to anything- but there was definitly life in her eyes and these eyes were dark brown, deep and pierced my heart- Off we went in my van to their first foster home-we felt they had to stay together-Minnie was too weak to go to the vet so the vet came to her- after a very thorough examintaion and blood work, we found out that Minnie's parathyroid was not working properly and she needed to be on compounded Calcium supplement for the rest of her life, otherwise she would go into seizures and die. Everything else was okay - so we started the girls on the same regimen my old dogs are on: NUPRO SILVER, NZYMES, COLOSTRUM and food, good, qualtiy food with several feedings a day-
Fast forward to now: While we all felt that Minnie lives on borrowed time and every day she wakes up is a good day, Minnie decided to show us that everything is on her term-The old Frank Sinatra song:"MY Way' must have been written with Minnie Mouse in mind- Through the months we have her now in our hearts and in our group, Minnie became stronger , she gained at least 10 lbs (she just weight 46 lbs the day we got her in) her coat is the shiniest, sleekest and silkiest you have ever seen or touched-it looks like liquid black glass-Her weak hint quarters became stronger due to the Colostrum and, was she not able to hold her pee-.... for more than 2-3 hours, she now sleeps through the night and is letting her foster mom know when she wants to go out during the day- We would have never believed it, but this old, determind, loving and spunky little girl, has beaten all odds and is our poster child for all senior greyhounds- We saw a true Miracle happen right in front of our eyes-She taught us that where there is a will and love and determination on both sides, there is hope and a future.
Minnie runs the show in Jill's house_(yes, no other but our Jill, whom most of you know, is loving up on Minnie and serving her on a daily basis)- She barks and comes up to Jill when she wants attention, she barks when she is hungry and wants to be fed, she barks when she wants to go out- She has Jill and her sister wrapped around her paws and I think they don't want it any other way-
3 weeks ago I brought our Sunny Crockett over to be cat tested - Minnie put her eyes on him throuhg the slider-well, she demanded to be introduced to him- (that COUGAR!) and she and he had a ball in the fenced in yard, Minnie ran around like a little bronco horse-and when called to come back into the house, she ignored us- she had fun and was laughing her head off seing us run after her to get her back into the cool house-
We are blessed to have Minnie Mouse in our lifes and in our group-
UPDATE ON LUCY: Sweet, loving and adorable as Miss Lucy is, her foster parents already let us know that there is no way they ever let her go-Lucy is a dream of a greyhound and found forever happiness and forever love again!
